The other day I was
wondering about my Father who passed away 20 years ago – how he KNEW this
lifetime was meant to be rich with love and peace.
He served in the army as a young cadet and later in the
Second World War in Europe, surviving 5 years in a Prisoner Of War camp and
afterwards starting a large family in far away New Zealand.
He worked hard to ensure we all lived comfortably and had a
good education –
but the single most enduring message I have treasured from his memory is his steadfast gentle heart.
but the single most enduring message I have treasured from his memory is his steadfast gentle heart.
No matter how tough his life was, to put bread on the table
and begin a legacy in a new country – he carried himself gracefully,
considerately and peacefully.
His even-ness is the strength I carry with me, too. Sort of
like keeping a small wooden boat balanced in the water – so it doesn’t tip
over!
The reason I’m sharing this is that ‘even-ness’ is another
word for ‘peace’.
After watching entire populations being decimated in that
great war, he was ready for peace – inside and out.
He spent his later years tending his vegetable garden and
gazing quietly at the panoramic view from his elevated home.
What price can we place on peace?
Are we prepared to work hard for peace of mind and heart?
Is life about working to enjoy life, or to fall prey to our
self-doubts, disappointments and fears…
A long time ago, I remember reading a story about a man and
his pet dog – who followed him everywhere!
The love between these two was immeasurable.
In fact it was so strong that when the man passed away, his
dog spent days, even weeks at his grave pining.
It was only until neighbours of the man decided to adopt
this dog, and give it love and shelter that the dog eventually over time healed
its grief and began to spark up again, enjoying its life.
Love and warmth, friendship and joy – these heal our hearts
and fulfill our need for inner peace.
There is a need inside us all for peace.
For companionship, for love, for nourishment of our soul.
My Father knew he needed to fulfill his life through enjoying
his family, his amazing accomplishment of raising six children after the
devastation of his earlier years in Europe.
The joy, the fun, the struggles, the clear intention to
survive insurmountable odds: from arriving in a new country with $50 in his
pocket, with a wife and new child – to guiding his children through their early
lives.
Peace could be what we are all striving for…
Inner and outer peace – where we open our hearts to each
other, where we are surrounded with love, joy, calm and nurturing.
The reason I’m opening this subject is because many of us
ARE striving – yet we can easily lose focus of WHAT we are striving FOR.
We may be striving for accomplishment, for recognition, for
money to survive, even to contribute to humanity in this short lifetime.
All this striving is important – and it is ALSO important to
stop.
And to notice WHAT we are actually striving FOR.
Because AS SOON AS we become CLEAR on the truth in our
hearts – and whether that is an external circumstance – or an internal sense of
peace, our striving can become more effective, more passionate, more fun – and more
fulfilling.
PROCESS:
Take a moment right now,
1. Close your eyes and take a long, deep breath.
2. Imagine yourself standing on the edge of a cliff looking out over the sparkling sea.
3.
Now jump.
4.
Allow yourself to FREE FALL.
5.
And NOTICE the WHAT – what is MOST important to
you.
6.
It is in this moment – that you have FREED
yourself from fear. And felt the truth of your heart.
7.
NOW your choices about your life can be clearer –
and on-purpose.
Thank you for reading this short blog post, it has been
